The biggest difference between traditional color and lived-in color isn't the look, it's how often you're back in the chair. Here's what actually changes depending on which one you choose.

One Thing Is the Same for Both

Regardless of which technique you choose, tone is always the first thing to fade. Toner sits as a thin layer on top of your color, and it naturally lifts out faster than anything underneath it. That means toner refreshes happen on a similar schedule no matter what, usually every 4 to 6 weeks, to keep your color from drifting warm or brassy.

Where Traditional Color Diverges

Traditional color and highlights are placed close to the root, which means regrowth becomes visible fairly quickly. A full refresh, meaning new root color or fresh highlights, is typically needed every 6 to 12 weeks to keep the look consistent. This is the trade-off for the crisp, high-contrast result traditional color delivers.

Where Lived-In Color Diverges

Lived-in color is placed and blended specifically to grow out softly, so there's no harsh line demanding an immediate fix. A full lived-in color service is only recommended once every 6 to 12 months. In between, a mini or partial refresh, touching up regrowth and reviving dimension, is typically needed every 4 to 6 months. That's a significantly longer runway than traditional color allows.

So Which Costs You More Time Over a Year?

Traditional color means several full refresh visits across the year, each one resetting your root line. Lived-in color means one full service, a couple of mini refreshes, and toner touch-ups in between. Both need toner attention on a similar schedule, the real time difference comes down to how often you need the actual color and placement redone.

Which One Is Right for You?

If you love a crisp, high-contrast look and don't mind more frequent visits, traditional color delivers that. If you'd rather stretch the time between appointments and let your color grow out gracefully, lived-in color is built for exactly that. Neither is more correct, it's about which trade-off fits your life.
