How Long Do Hair Extensions Really Last?

There are two different questions hiding inside this one: how long can you keep reusing the same set of hair, and how often do you need to come in for maintenance in between? The answer depends on which method you're wearing, and it's worth separating the two so you know what to actually expect.

Maintenance: How Often You Need to Come In

This is the more immediate timeline, and it's different for each method. Sew-in hidden beaded wefts need to be moved up every 6 to 8 weeks. Because the rows are fixed against the scalp, natural hair growth pushes them out of position relatively quickly, and leaving them too long is when clients start feeling tightness or seeing the tracks show through.

K-Tips run on a longer cycle — every 4 months. Because each strand is bonded individually rather than in a fixed row, there's more flexibility before the growth becomes noticeable or uncomfortable, which is one of the reasons clients who don't want frequent salon visits often lean toward K-Tips.

Either way, maintenance appointments aren't optional add-ons — they're what keeps the extensions comfortable and your natural hair protected underneath them (more on that in our article on whether extensions damage natural hair).

Reuse: How Long the Actual Hair Lasts

The hair itself — the physical strands or wefts — can typically be reused across multiple maintenance cycles before it needs to be replaced, as long as it's cared for properly between appointments. How many cycles you get out of one set depends heavily on hair quality, how well it's maintained at home, and how it's handled during each move-up.

This is a conversation your stylist will have with you at each maintenance appointment rather than a fixed number we promise upfront, because it genuinely varies person to person. Some clients get significantly more mileage out of a set than others based on their at-home routine alone.

What Actually Shortens the Lifespan

Heat styling without protection, sleeping with extensions wet, brushing incorrectly, and using the wrong products near the attachment points all wear hair down faster — both the extension hair and your own underneath it. Skipping or delaying maintenance appointments also shortens lifespan, since hair that's been pulled on past its move-up date takes more stress with each wear.

The clients who get the most life out of their extensions are the ones who treat maintenance appointments as non-negotiable and follow the at-home care guidance we walk through at each visit.
