Root Touch-Up vs. Root Melt: What's the Difference?

These two terms get used interchangeably a lot, but they're not actually the same service, and knowing the difference helps you ask for exactly what you need.

What a Root Touch-Up Is

A root touch-up is primarily about covering gray at the root. It's a solid, targeted application of color right at your regrowth, meant to keep gray coverage consistent. If needed, a root touch-up can also be blended downward into the rest of your color, similar to a root melt, but gray coverage is the main job it's doing.

What a Root Melt Is

A root melt is about blending, not gray coverage. It's included as part of your custom color service whenever you're going for a lived-in look, and it softly blends your natural root into the lightened, dimensional color below it. There's no hard line where your color starts, it melts from root to ends in one smooth gradient.

The Core Difference

Think of it this way: a root touch-up solves for gray, a root melt solves for a soft, seamless transition. If you're not gray and simply want your regrowth blended into your lived-in color, that's a root melt. If gray coverage is your main concern, that's a root  touch-up, and your stylist can still blend it downward afterward if you want that same soft transition.

Can You Need Both?

Yes, and it's common. Many guests with some gray want both full coverage at the root and a soft, blended transition into their color below it. In that case, your stylist combines both techniques in the same appointment, gray coverage where you need it, melted seamlessly into the rest of your look.

Which One Is Included in Your Service

A root melt is already built into every custom color service when you're going for a lived-in result, it's not a separate add-on. Gray coverage is never automatically included. If you need a root touch-up for gray, that's always a separate service, discussed and priced at your consultation based on how much gray you're working with.
