But if you've already got previous color or gray coverage color on your hair, hand-painting alone typically won't lift more than a few shades through that existing color. That's where foilage comes in, a technique that combines the natural placement of hand-painting with the added lightening power of foils. Foilage gets you the same soft, dimensional look, just with more lift where your hair actually needs it.
